THE BATTLE OF KOLDING – DRAMATISED CITY WALK

The Battle of Kolding 23 April 1849

"There is hardly any Danish city that in the present, unhappy war has felt the burdens and horrors of war more than Kolding." – A Koldingian refugee, 1849

This year marks 175 years since the Battle of Kolding in 1849 left parts of the city as smoldering ruins. Both inside and outside Kolding, the Danish army had fought against the Schleswig-Holstein rebels to retake the border town.

The characters Widow Karen Jensen and Major Victor Knabstrup take you through the streets of Kolding, while they remember the fierce street battles, the brave soldiers and the pressured Koldingers. The city walk takes you up close to the wars, the human drama and the traces of the battles that can still be seen in the city today.

It is a story about the horrors, courage, helpfulness, suffering and cruel revenge of the enemy, just as the Danish army had driven the last Schleswig-Holstein soldier from the city.

Place: Staldgården 1, 6000 Kolding

FREE STORYTELLING TOUR IN KOLDING

Join a free city walk in Kolding's history and learn more about your city. On this tour, you will get an insight into what Kolding looked like in the Middle Ages and developed into the city that you know today.

Are you aware that the street system in the center of Kolding is, apart from Jernbanegade, the same streets as in the Middle Ages? And did you know that in Kolding there was once a Grey Friars monastery, and that central Kolding is built in Koldinghus castle garden.

Our guide can show you traces of the bloody civil war on April 23, 1849 in the streets we use today to shop, and tell you about the time when the southern part of Kolding city was a factory area, and the western part was a cemetery and a fortification.

Meet at Akseltorv on Tuesdays in July at 13:00 and our guide can tell you about this and much more.

FREE STORYTELLING TOUR AT SKAMLINGSBANKEN

Skamlingsbanken is a large natural area with a cultural history that you will not find in many other places in Denmark.

Museum Kolding invites you on a storytelling tour at the top of South and South Jutland. You will hear about a landscape shaped by the Ice Age and about how the place played a central role in the duchies and the Schleswig wars as early as the 1800s. And not only that; Throughout the 1900s, Skamlingsbanken was a place where great personalities spoke for Danishness, language, democracy and women's struggle. Well-known figures such as Gyrithe Lemche, Grundtvig, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Orla Lehmann and Kaj Munk have all given speeches from the historic rostrum, which you can also stand on.

The tour lasts about an hour and takes you to the most significant historical sites and the most beautiful views. You should expect to walk about 1 kilometer in a (lightly) hilly terrain.

The visitor center café is open; Here you can enjoy a light lunch before the tour or a cup of coffee and a piece of cake when the tour is over. After the tour, it is obvious to look inside the visitor center's exhibition and on your own immerse yourself in the history or hear the speeches given on site.
